Discover the South East

Harwich is well located for a number of interesting visitor destinations and attractions

Harwich is well located for a number of interesting visitor destinations and attractions. As well as cities like London and Cambridge, which are within easy reach, there are many other exciting locations to visit close by.

Visit ‘Constable Country’, the landscape that inspired artist John Constable; or Colchester, Britain’s oldest recorded town; and Saffron Walden, quintessentially English and one of the finest preserved examples of a medieval market town.

The East of England offers a mix of old and new, with historic remains, buzzing shopping destinations, and lovely beaches that offer traditional seaside fun.

Harwich : An historic maritime port

Harwich, an historic maritime port, has many associations with famous characters. These include Samuel Pepys and Christopher Jones, Master of the Mayflower, who sailed to America in 1620 with some of the very first ‘Adventurers and Pilgrims’.

Other attractions worth visiting include the Redoubt Fort , a circular fort built in 1808 to protect the harbour from a Napoleonic invasion. The Electric Palace Cinema , the oldest unaltered purpose-built cinema in Britain and still going strong. Free guided walks of the town are available from here in the summer months.

Dovercourt : A peaceful family resort

The neighbouring town of Dovercourt, a five-minute taxi ride away, offers a small but varied shopping centre, and the town boasts a Blue Flag Award for its beaches, with boating lake, putting green, beach café (with bouncy castle and children’s play area), roller skating rink and amusement arcade along the seafront.

Please view the Visit Harwich website for more information on what the area has to offer.
