Port operations are supported by a pool of terminal handling equipment, including forklift trucks, internal movement vehicles, trailers, telehandlers and reachstackers.

Large volumes of containers are also shipped on Ro-Ro ferry services to Holland.

Harwich is ideally located for serving the South East of the UK, Midlands and further afield. The excellent rail and road links provide options for handling almost any type of cargo.

Euromed offer regular sailings to Northern Cyprus, carrying wheeled plant, cars and commercial vehicles.

LIQUID BULK

Harwich International’s strategic position on the UK east coast makes it ideal for handling a range of hydrocarbons.

Speciality hydrocarbons have been imported and exported through the port since the early 1960s, when a refinery, currently owned and operated by Haltermann Carless, was opened on a site next to the port.

Up to half a million tonnes of condensates are distilled at the refinery every year, in their main components naphtha, kerosene and gas oils. Other similar feedstocks are imported for processing alongside these products to create a range of speciality products for industry.

Haltermann Carless imports feedstock from all over the world to refine at the site; Harwich was chosen for the operation due to the close proximity to the important hydrocarbon ports of Antwerp and Rotterdam.

Haltermann Carless is one of the oldest oil companies in the UK and one of the largest speciality hydrocarbon producers and petrochemical distributors in Europe. It employs approximately 100 people at its Harwich site.

Vessels of up to 140 metres in length and 8 metres draft can be accommodated at the dedicated deep-water tanker berth, which is linked by direct pipeline to the refinery.

Dry bulk

With East Anglia’s grain fields on its doorstep, Harwich International is ideally placed to handle grain exports. In addition, dry bulk handling expertise also extends to cement, salt, rice and animal feedstuffs.

A 6,000 square metre grain terminal features dedicated weighbridges, elevators and sampling equipment. The grain store can hold up to 20,000 tonnes of product in segregated bays and the facility has a load rate of up to 1,700 tonnes per hour.

Undercover loading and unloading of trucks means that drivers have a minimal wait whatever the weather.

Substantial volumes of grain continue to be handled throughout the export season, as well as occasional imports of soya and other products.

Meanwhile, a 4,800 square metre general warehouse has the capacity to store more than 20,000 tonnes of bulk-bagged product, or other general cargoes.

Trade vehicle imports

The handling of trade vehicle imports and exports demands a very specific expertise, together with specialist and secure facilities. Harwich International offers the automotive sector a flexible package with all the vital components.

The port has a long history of handling cars and vehicles, from both rail wagons and dedicated car carriers.

More than 15 acres of secure, well-lit standage areas are available for trade vehicles and there are options to develop other areas for this business.

Harwich is ideally located to handle trade vehicles with its excellent road connections. The port also offers the option of rail transport via its intermodal railhead.

Keen to establish its reputation in this dynamic business sector, Harwich International is proud to emphasise a commitment to care and zero damage.

Over recent years large volumes of personal vehicle imports for private customers have also taken advantage of the port’s Ro-Ro connections.

Offering facilities and solutions to both long-term and seasonal traffic, Harwich International offers its customers a proven track record.

PROPERTY RENTAL

Harwich International has various properties available for rental, including open storage, warehousing and office space. Further areas are also available for development.

OIL AND GAS DECOMMISSIONING

With numerous fields having ended, or nearing the end, of their commercial lives, decommissioning operations in the North Sea offer both very real challenges and opportunities, in the coming decades. Operating from a sheltered location, with large areas of land immediately available for occupancy and an excellent proximity to market, Harwich International is ideally placed to support this important and fast growing sector.

RAIL OPERATIONS

Benefiting from a railway station within the port, passengers are able to arrive via regular direct services from London Liverpool Street and beyond.

There is an intermodal rail head located at the centre of the port.
