Approximately 1.1 million passengers pass through Harwich
International Port every year, travelling on ferry services
to the Netherlands, and Denmark.
The Port remains one of the UK’s most important passenger
ferry terminals, and this success has been boosted by the
recent introduction of state-of-the-art vessels on to all
services.
As well as the high-tech HSS 1500 fast ferry "Stena Discovery",
which makes two daily departures from a dedicated berth,
Stena Line also operates two new ro-pax vessels on its
Harwich-Hook of Holland route.
The new "Stena Britannica" makes an overnight crossing
to the Hook of Holland in just over six hours, and has
246
cabins
and capacity for 900 passengers.
The introduction of the "Dana Sirena" on the Esbjerg service
by DFDS Seaways has reduced the crossing time on this route
by two hours. The vessel provides capacity for 600 passengers
and has 196 cabins.
Harwich has a long tradition of regular passenger links with
Europe, and works hard to maintain its reputation for a high-quality,
personal service.
A new separate entrance for passenger vehicles has been
designed to create a direct route to the check-in booths
for cars
and ensure that the “port experience” is simple
and stress-free for travellers.
A shop, vending facilities and food outlet are available
at the car check-in area.
For passengers arriving by train or coach, or intending to
leave their car at the Port, a very short walk takes them
to the newly refurbished, air-conditioned passenger terminal.
Inside the terminal there is ample seating together with
ferry operators’ reception desks, and passengers
can take advantage of a licensed bar, restaurant, amusements,
gift shop, exchange bureau and cash machine (for further
information click on Passenger Travel in the home page
and
go to our Port Amenities section).
Baggage services include airport-style check-in and reclaim
carousels, essential in order to meet the very fast turnaround
times of the "Stena Discovery".
A covered walkway connects the terminal directly with all
the passenger berths.
