Approximately 1 million passengers pass through Harwich International Port every year, travelling on ferry services to the Netherlands and Denmark.
The port remains one of the UK's most important passenger ferry terminals, and this success has been boosted by the recent introduction of state-of-the-art vessels on to all services.
Stena Line operates two Superferries, the 'Stena Britannica' and the 'Stena Hollandica'. Both vessels have recently undergone a £70 million investment to extensively refurbish and lengthen them in order to offer more spacious passenger decks and better on-board facilities. Crossings take just over six hours with a day and overnight sailing.
A unique passenger walkway/boarding bridge has been purpose designed and built to meet the needs of the lengthened Stena vessels and is part of a £4.5 million investment.
The introduction of the 'Dana Sirena' on the Esbjerg service by DFDS Seaways has reduced the crossing time on this route by two hours. The vessel provides capacity for 600 passengers and has 196 cabins.
Harwich has a long tradition of regular passenger links with Europe, and works hard to maintain its reputation for a high-quality, personal service.
A separate entrance for passenger vehicles has been designated to create a direct route to the check-in booths for cars and ensure that the 'port experience' is simple and stress-free for travellers. A shop, vending facilities and food outlet are available at the car check-in area.
For passengers arriving by train or coach, or intending to leave their car at the port, a very short walk takes them to the newly refurbished, air-conditioned passenger terminal.
Inside the terminal there is ample seating together with ferry operators' reception desks, and passengers can take advantage of a restaurant, amusements, gift shop, exchange bureau, internet cafe, information point and cash machine.
Baggage services include airport-style check in and reclaim carousels. A covered walkway connects the terminal directy with all the passenger berths. All this ensures a fast, efficient and comfortable experience for the traveller.
For passengers arriving into Harwich, some exciting visitor destinations are close by. Visit Constable Country to view the landscape that inspired John Constable, Colchester (Britain's oldest recorded town), and Saffron Walden. The UK's premier destinations such as London and Cambridge are also within easy reach.
