• Ideal gateway for dry bulks, with strong rail advantage

With East Anglia’s grain fields on its doorstep, Harwich International Port has always been ideally placed to handle grain exports. In addition, dry bulk handling expertise also extends to cement, salt, rice and animal feedstuffs.

A recently built 6,000 square metre grain terminal features state-of-the-art weighbridges, elevators and sampling equipment, together with top-quality outside surfacing, grabs and cranes.

The grain store can hold up to 20,000 tonnes of product in segregated bays and the facility has a load rate of up to 1,700 tonnes per hour.

Undercover loading and unloading of trucks means that drivers have minimal queuing whatever the weather.

The port has recently invested in a Bobcat 864 T200, a versatile vehicle that can be lifted inside a vessel to help dig out the sides when discharging, or used during loading to help keep things tidy on the quay, helping to speed grain handling operations.

Substantial volumes of grain continue to be handled throughout the export season, as well as occasional imports of soya and other products.

Meanwhile, a 4,800 square metre cement terminal has the capacity to store more than 20,000 tonnes of imported bulk-bagged cement. It is equipped to despatch cement in bulk tanker loads, in 1.5 tonne bulk bags, or in 25 kg sacks.

Harwich has the key advantage of deep water, offering bulk ships a draft of up to 9.5 metres. The availability of land and our enviable rail links add up to an unbeatable combination.
