Port Plays Part in Tsunami Relief Effort
Monday 4th September 06

As part of efforts to rebuild the areas devastated by the Tsunami of Boxing Day, 2004, the Port of Felixstowe has joined forces with Trinity House, to ship a container full of machinery and equipment to Sri Lanka.

The twenty-foot container, filled with machine parts, generators, radar equipment and various electrics, will be shipped on the Maersk Dauphin, due to leave Felixstowe on 6th September. The goods were purchased with money raised by Trinity House, and the container was shipped from Harwich to Felixstowe on their vessel, the THV Mermaid. The Port of Felixstowe agreed to unload the container and store it without charge, and load it onto the Maersk Dauphin for onward travel.

Trinity House has been involved in re-establishing the maritime waymarks for the navigable waters in Sri Lanka and is sending out a team of technicians with the machinery. The plans also involve the refurbishment of two lighthouses.

Chris Lewis, Chief Executive Officer of Hutchison Ports (UK) Limited, owners of the Port of Felixstowe commented:

“We are proud to be able to play our part in the Tsunami relief effort, and when we were approached, we had no reservations in agreeing straight away. We are happy to be working with Trinity House and Maersk to ensure these much-needed goods arrive where they are needed, as quickly as possible”

The container was unloaded from the THV Mermaid onto Landguard Terminal, on Friday 1st September.
