'Ship-Spotting’ Made Easier With The Port of Felixstowe
The John Bradfield Viewing Area
6th February 2006

Improvements to the Port of Felixstowe’s website will make life easier for the growing band of ship-spotters that visit the Port’s Viewing Area. Amongst the upgrades, 'Maiden Calls', 'First Calls' and 'Name Changes' fields have been added to the website’s ‘Shipping Information’ section.

The Landguard Peninsula attracts on average 700,000 visitors a year, and a high proportion of those trips are to the John Bradfield Viewing Area to see vessels come in and out. The Port also receives a large number of enquiries about specific vessels that visit. Easy access to this information should mean that enthusiasts should never again miss a vessel they want to see.

The website has undergone extensive redevelopment by the Port’s Information Systems Department, and now features a 'Newsflash' section, as well as a more in-depth Photo Library and an upgraded Haulier Information Section. The website still includes popular pages such as an electronic version of the Port Journal, recent press releases, vacancies and the Port webcam, although all are much more interactive than their predecessors.

Chris Lewis, Chief Executive Officer of Hutchison Ports (UK) Limited, said:

“We are extremely pleased with the new-look website. Technology is improving at a tremendous rate nowadays, and it is essential that the Port of Felixstowe keeps up. Our website is designed to be of practical benefit to port users, but also of interest to the local community. We have maintained all of the popular elements whilst making the overall site more vibrant, useful and informative.”

As part of the Port’s plans to develop the southern part of the Port, the Viewing Area will be expanded, with more room for car parking and buses. A visitors' centre will be built with interactive features and displays, and a dedicated berth added for the Felixstowe-Harwich foot ferry.
