Port of Felixstowe Welcomes World’s Biggest Container Ships
17th August 2005

On Wednesday 17th August 2005, the Port of Felixstowe welcomed the inaugural call of the world’s largest container ship, the 'MSC Pamela'.

The 'MSC Pamela', measuring 321m in length, with a gross tonnage of 107,200 and with a breadth of 45.6m, can carry up to 9,200 TEU, and was calling at Felixstowe as part of the Asia/Europe Silk Express route. The vessel is capable of a maximum speed of 25 knots.

The 'MSC Pamela' followed the 367m-long 'Gudrun Maersk', the world’s longest container vessel, which visited the Port earlier in the week.

Paul Davey, Corporate Affairs Manager of Hutchison Ports (UK) Ltd, the parent company of the Port of Felixstowe, commented:

“Here at the Port of Felixstowe, we pride ourselves on being able to accommodate the latest generation of container ships, and having the world’s largest vessel call here underlines the importance of Felixstowe to the UK economy.”

He continued:

“Ships of this size are becoming more and more common due to the growth in exports from China and the need for goods around the world. The UK is in urgent need of more deep-water container capacity to be able to accommodate vessels such as the 'MSC Pamela', and we will continue to push for our proposed new developments at Felixstowe South and Bathside Bay to enable us to meet this demand.”

The Felixstowe South Reconfiguration and the development of Bathside Bay would create a container complex with 15 deep-water berths in a single location. The development would create the only UK hub capable of providing sufficient volumes to support daily short-sea feeder services to other parts of the UK. The increased use of feeder sailings will help relieve the pressure on the country’s road network.
